Vice President of Technology


As Vice President of Technology, Mark is the co-inventor of the LifeCode Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engine with two patents on NLP technology for computer-assisted coding (CAC). The LifeCode NLP Engine powers the Optum CAC solution, automating the assignment of ICD-9, ICD-10, current procedural terminology (CPT) and health care common procedure coding system (HCPCS) codes for hospitals and physicians. Mark Morsch brings to Optum more than a decade of medical technology, engineering and coding experience.

Mark is an author and speaker on the effective use of NLP and CAC in the healthcare industry. He serves on the executive committee of the Health Story Project and was co-chair of the AHIMA-sponsored CAC Summit in 2011 and 2012.

Prior to joining OptumInsight, Mark worked for A-Life Medical as the Vice President of Technology. He led a team of computer scientists, linguists and coding experts in the continuing advancement of A-Life Medical’s CAC technology. Mark holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.
